This was brought up yesterday by Kim. (she's taking Eng. Lit for A levels by the way.)
She told me that their first assignment was to talk about how roses are related to love... (or something like that...)
Well, hmmmm.... sounds pretty interesting
and i bet a whole lot of people would not be able to answer if this question is posed in our current day school classroom.
well, roses have a lot in common with love.
They're red
No matter how beautiful they are, you just have to tolerate the thorns. (just like our other half, you love them for how beautiful they are as well as their flaws)
And it takes a lot of tender loving and care in order for a delicate yet beautiful rose to grow to its full potential.
Failing to do so results in the petals falling off one by one, and the plant itself wilting, not a very good metaphor to describe a relationship.
Yet, if both sides tolerate on another, a resolution can be made, just like a new rose after the old one has fallen.
So, roses have a lot in common with love... (including how expensive it takes to nurture one, if you're a guy dating an average girl)
Is that enough, kim?

Kim the Korean girl? I bet it's Ms. Grace's homework.
ReplyDeleteRoses smell good; love smells good. However, like in the case of smelly toufu, smell often sets the human mind on the wrong track. The rose might be fragrant, but when you put your nose closer to inhale its richness, you may get a sting on your nose. Some bee just happened to be there. Similarly, love might have an appealing side, but as to the consequence of getting into it... well, no one can really tell, can they?
And of course, roses wither, relatively faster than other flowers. So does love, some of them. How long does love last? Some love - parental, filial, comradely - may last you a lifetime, but some are fragile too. Just like you said, there must be some mutual agreement or compromising.
Roses are colourful. Red, yellow, white and now they have those genetically modified blue ones. That symbolises brilliance, surprises, freshness etc.
